Peggy Kalpakian Johnson

“Growing up in Los Angeles during the 1930s Great Depression, my great and all-encompassing dream was to go to the University of Southern California.”

in  Memory into Memoir: An Anthology 2016

Peggy Kalpakian Johnson was born in Constantinople, Turkey,
in 1922 and arrived in Los Angeles, California, in 1923,
the second child of a vibrant Armenian immigrant family who
became proud American citizens. “Sunshine and Silence” is excerpted
from a personal memoir that captures the joys and tears,
emotions and tensions of that long-ago era. Both of her grandsons,
Bear and Brendan McCreary, are graduates of the USC
School of Music. Peggy is the mother of four children, including
novelist, Laura Kalpakian.
